Nutmeg

For my mother, nutmeg is a basic spice — it adds a fine and punchy taste to all kinds of savoury dishes like mashed potatoes, soup, or meatballs. When I came to New Zealand, I looked for it in every pantry, but to no avail! When they told me it's not that common here, I was astounded. How could something so objectively useful never make its way to a meaningful part of the world population? After all, even a great selection of pests from the world's flora and fauna has been introduced to New Zealand by now.

This post is my PSA: Season your next dinner with two small grates of nutmeg. Also: What else is humanity missing out on? There's gotta be room for improvement in a few places…
