Though I live in the present moment, it is always with preparation for the next one. It is not enough to appreciate and optimise what is happening right now; to react appropriately to manifold situations is only possible if previously there has been awareness of this diversity. I more often than not find people act counter to my expectations, and as a traveller, I hold these surprises in high regard. A pocket knife is one artefact of this mindful preparedness, as it is often the best tool available, but this should not come as an excuse for packing useless just-in-case items. I cannot draw a clear line between the two, but it is quite easy to make prudent decisions on preparedness if there is no muddling romanticism or unreason.
